Historic Stowe family properties are up for auction in Gaston County

Belmont's Stowe family is selling a historic property in the heart of downtown Belmont.

The 11-acre property, located at 29 N. Main St., 23 and 27 Woodrow Ave., was home to Ruth and R. L. Stowe Jr. and their family for over 70 years, according to a press release from Tranzon Key, who was hired to auction the property. The property hasn't been inhabited in several years.

The Stowe family played a vital role in Belmont’s development over the years, as R. L. Stowe brought the textile industry to the town in 1901, founding The Chronicle Mills, which later with other companies became R. L. Stowe Mills, Inc.

“This land has been held by the Stowe family for nearly a century. To find 10 contiguous acres in a historic district — just 12 miles from one of the fastest-growing financial hubs in the country — is unheard of. We aren’t just selling a lot; we are inviting a developer to help write the next chapter of Belmont’s history,” said Bill Londrey, president of Tranzon Key.

The auction will be held online. Bidding ends at noon on Feb. 25.
